Change is a Good Thing

Change. Most people really don’t like it. Some run from it. But our perspective is that to be really great, you can’t get stagnant. Sometimes you have to mix it up a bit and grow and move forward. Well, that’s just what we think Capi’s did with their new menu.

Don’t get us wrong, we loved Capi’s small plate menu. The food was always delicious and it is one of our favorite restaurants. But even when you are doing something good, a change can be empowering!

Capi’s now has a Nuevo Latino menu. What’s that? It’s fresh, bold and modern Southwestern and Mexican cuisine – and it is outstanding. So good, that we ate there three times in one week!

From brunch to dinner, the choices on the new menu are a breath of fresh air. At brunch, where else can you get warm bananas, eggs, black beans, green peas, feta cheese and salsa on top of corn tortillas? This traditional recipe from the Yucatan was a surprise but a delicious change from the ordinary. Even our youngest ministaffer gobbled it up!

And for dinner? We’ve enjoyed shrimp quesadillias, tuna tostadas, and our most favorite dish: a chili relleno filled with corn, scallops and shrimp in a wonderfully spicy sauce.

Yes, sometimes change can be scary, but ultimately, change is the only way to grow and become better. So our hats go off to Capi’s, for their inventive, inspiring, and delicious menu change. We can’t wait to go back.Capi’s Restaurant

The storm and brief cool down was a blessing yesterday, and today promises to not be quite as hot. There are lots of great things happening as we gear back up for another school year. Walk. Get the whole family walking at the Methodist Family Health’s 4th Annual Walk for Children & Families tonight. There will be live music, ice cream, pizza, and a chance to see the beautiful Little Rock skyline as the sun sets – all for a good cause. Friday. It’s the last, hot, sticky weekend of July. Summer sure is passing quickly. Next week may be August, but summer’s not quite over (and we’re sure this heat will stay for a while). Last Chance. This is the last weekend to see World of the Pharoahs at the Arkansas Arts Center. This exhibit is full of interesting artifacts from everyday life in ancient Egypt. Our ministaffers have seen it four different times and loved it each and every time. The exhibit closes on Monday, so don’t miss your chance to enjoy the treasures. Grab a Bite. It’s time for the fourth Foodie Fest in Argenta! Don’t miss this fun and delicious way to celebrate our nation’s birthday. The Certified Arkansas Farmers Market, arts and crafts and live music will all be happening, too! It’s going to be a great day in Argenta. See the Stars. Kids of all ages (that includes us) enjoy fireworks – especially on the 4th of July. And there’s no better place to see fireworks in Little Rock, than along the banks of the Arkansas River. Join your friends and family for Pops on the River Sunday night. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and sit out under the stars. The Arkansas Symphony will entertain you with lots of great patriotic music, and then be prepared to be amazed at the very cool fireworks that will explode in the sky above. Sunday, gates open at 5:30 p.m. Arkansas Symphony Orchestra begins at 8:30 p.m. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. No coolers allowed, but concessions are available.

Last week we gave you a bit of a sneak peak into our busy week ahead. Well, now we’ve completed our theater tour, and we are pleased to report that both Smokey Joe’s Cafe and The Wizard of Oz lived up to our expectations.

First, we took the ministaffers to The Rep’s final production of the season, Smokey Joe’s Cafe. What fun. As promised, the cast performed such beloved songs as “Hound Dog” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Love Potion #9.” And then there were even more, like the nostalgic “Neighborhood” and the empowering “I am a Woman” and the hilarious “Don Juan.”

The cast had extraordinarily high energy – which is needed in a production where the music and dancing never stop. And, of course, the casting was spot on. That’s something we’ve come to (almost) take for granted when we see a production at The Rep. This is certainly a production for all ages – and one that you simply cannot miss seeing on the stage of The Rep.

Our next show we saw this week was The Wizard of Oz at Robinson Center Music Hall. This is the last production for Celebrity Attractions’ current season – and we must say – probably the best. This production is based on the movie we’ve all come to know and love, and everyone involved with this production, from the director, to the cast and crew, did an outstanding job. Even Toto got all his lines right.

The special effects were simple yet effective. One of our favorite effects was using reversible clothing to change the dancing poppies from red to white when the snow hit them. This simple effect brought about “wows” from all around us. Robinson is sometimes a hard venue to enjoy because of it’s acoustics – but this production sounded – and looked – perfect. It was a very worthwhile and fun evening, and we highly recommend you see it today or tonight for it’s last day here in Little Rock.

These two productions are both family friendly and worth every penny for the cost of admission on these hot and sticky nights during an Arkansas summer. Enjoy.

Can you believe we’re already in May? This year just seems to be flying by, doesn’t it? Things are sneaking up on us, but don’t let Mother’s Day be one of those days that catches you off guard. It happens on Sunday. So you’ve still got a whole week to prepare.

How are you going to honor your mother? There are lots of ways to honor her. But to help you out – we’re going to give you three of our favorite things.

We love flowers. But sometimes that just seems so ordinary. This year – mix it up. The Crown Shop has these great pots with fun sayings on them like “Go Confidently in the Director of Your Dreams” and “A Friend is a Gift You Give Yourself.” Fill the pot with packages of seeds, some hand lotion or soap, maybe even a gift certificate for pampering. They are the cutest pots ever, and this way, mom can remember your thoughtfulness all year long.

Another way to make the flowers last is to pick up a huge sunflower door decoration from Cynthia East Fabrics. These are the most fun to hang on your front door – they’re inviting and colorful. Package it with a promise to mom to plant some new flowers in her garden, and you’ll really make her day.

Mom can also wear flowers. What about a beautiful floral nightgown or casual day dress from Barbara Graves Intimate Fashions? No mom can resist feeling pretty and comfortable at the same time. And Barbara Graves has lots of different options to fit every mom’s unique style.

It was late on Saturday night, and no one had eaten yet. We wanted to go out, but also wanted to stay close to home. So we settled on Capi’s Restaurant.

Arriving at almost 8:30, the restaurant was packed, but we were lucky because a huge group of folks was just leaving. We love Capi’s because we could really come just as we were – no dressing up required. We settled into our seats wearing jeans and sweats and immediately ordered the queso fundido and some champagne. (Because any night is a good night for champagne!)

We looked over the menu and saw some new options – including a new bean dip. So we ordered some of that, too. Capi’s is a great place to just keep ordering small plates off the menu and graze through the meal. We love doing that.

The bean dip was delicious – and a nice compliment to the queso fundido, which is our all time favorite dish when we go to Capi’s. Next, we decided we had to try their vegetable soup that was the special. Capi’s always has fresh, homemade soups on the menu. And whatever the soup is for that day, we recommend you get it. Our vegetable soup was slightly spicy, and filled with chunks of wonderful vegetables. Having had our fill, we went home happy.

Until Sunday morning rolled around. We were hungry again! And we wanted brunch. So we went right back to Capi’s! Their brunch is fantastic, and we hadn’t been in a while, so it was time to go back. Their apple crepes are light and fresh. There are no canned apples in this dish! The champagne was just as good for brunch as it was for dinner, and Capi has promised us that the apple crepes will remain on her menu as she prepares for changes for spring and summer. Whew.

Yes, some places just keep beckoning us back. And Capi’s is one of those. It’s not often that we eat dinner and brunch at the same place when we’re at home, but this time, it was certainly worth it.
