Weekend Happenings August 5, 2011 Are you ready for August?  There is so much to do this month, and with the first week already behind us, we’re gearing up for lots of activity! School starts in a week…how did that happen? Weekend Happenings July 8, 2011 The past week was relatively calm around here.  It seemed that everyone was lounging on a lazy river after the Fourth, and we were only too happy to join in.  But now it’s time to get in gear.  Our youngest ministaffer turns one next week, so our lives are about to get busy again!  Here are our top three things to do this weekend: Art Around: Friday nights are always special to us – they always seem like the beginning of a mini-vacation.  And throw some art openings in the mix, and we’re really excited.  Tonight is 2nd Friday Art Night, and you don’t want to miss the openings of two great new exhibits.  First, at Historic Arkansas Museum, enjoy “Playing at War: Children’s Civil War Era Toys from the Collection of Greg McMahon.”  This exhibit takes a fascinating look at the toys children played with during wartime in the late 19th century.  Also opening tonight is “Lawrence Finney: Poetry” at Hearne Fine Art.  Finney’s graphic realism in both works on paper and canvas is stunning.  Friday, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. For more information visit www.2ndFridayArtNight.com. Weekend Happenings June 10, 2011 Well, it’s official.  Summer is here.  The traffic is lighter for our morning commute and the heat has settled over us like a blanket.  But some days we barely notice, as there is so much going on – we don’t have time to worry about a little heat!  Here are our top three things to do this weekend: Eat: We are, as you know, huge supporters of the local movement.  We eat and buy locally whenever possible.  And we’re so glad to see others out there doing the same thing.  On Saturday, enjoy the second installment of the Garden Gourmet Series at the River Market.  Local chefs bring locally grown food to your table with this sustainable food series.  This Saturday, they are cooking up recipes around tomatoes and peaches.  Yum.  Samples are, of course, part of the fun!  Saturday, River Market Pavilions, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Celebrate: Did you know that Arkansas is celebrating 175 years of statehood?  Come join in the celebration on Saturday as the Historic Arkansas Museum and the Old Statehouse Museum recreate life in 1836 Arkansas.  This joint living history event will have dancing, entertainment, and a parade from the Historic Arkansas Museum to the Old Statehouse Museum at noon, followed by a 26-gun salute!  Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Free.  Visit www.oldstatehouse.org for more information. Weekend Happenings June 3, 2011 Is it really June?  Our ministaffers are graduating, preparing for summer camps and so much more … but last time we checked, they were just starting school!  We hope everyone is settling into the heat of an Arkansas summer.  And really, we are glad it’s arrived.  Here are our top three things to do this weekend: Watch: The Little Rock Film Festival is back on the scene with groundbreaking narrative, documentary and short films to wow.  Enjoy a fun-filled weekend of movie screenings, parties, workshops and more.  Through Sunday at various locations.  Visit www.littlerockfilmfestival.org for a complete lineup of activities and times.
