The storm and brief cool down was a blessing yesterday, and today promises to not be quite as hot. There are lots of great things happening as we gear back up for another school year. Walk. Get the whole family walking at the Methodist Family Health’s 4th Annual Walk for Children & Families tonight. There will be live music, ice cream, pizza, and a chance to see the beautiful Little Rock skyline as the sun sets – all for a good cause. Friday. Registration begins at 6:00 p.m. Walk starts at 7:00 p.m. Cook’s Landing on the North Little Rock side of the Big Dam Bridge. $20 per individual/$50 per family. Play. Looking for even more family fun? Join in on Family Game Night at Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing. They will have dominoes, cards, board games and music. It’s the last, hot, sticky weekend of July. Summer sure is passing quickly. Next week may be August, but summer’s not quite over (and we’re sure this heat will stay for a while). Something New. We don’t want you to forget about “the art show,” which happens tonight and tomorrow night. Have an adult evening; enjoy a glass of wine; and look at some great art. Participating artists include Kevin Kresse, Spencer Jansen, Ray Wittenberg and many other great artists we know you will love. Plus, 10% of the ticket price goes to Our House. Friday: 7:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.; Sunday: 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. The Riviera Condominiums. Tickets: $10.

Cool Off. Bring the whole family downtown. You can go to the Rivermarket, shop, eat, and best of all – jump in the Peabody Park Splash Fountain! There’s something fun here for kids of all ages (and that means you, too!) – so kick off those flip-flops and relax in the water for a few minutes. Riverfront Park. Super Fun. It’s time again for one of the Super Summer Saturdays at the Clinton Presidential Center. These events feature lots of fun activities for kids that surround their latest exhibit: “Nature Unleashed.” So if the kids in your life are interested in things like tornadoes, hurricanes and other strong forces of nature, bring them on Saturday for a fun learning experience. To rain or not to rain. Hasn’t that been the question all week? But the break in the heat has been a welcome relief. Enjoy the weekend and all a mid-July day brings. Art. It’s time for 2nd Friday Art Night! There are lots of great openings tonight, including Luke Anguhahlug: Inuit Artist in the Mezzanine Gallery of the Arkansas Studies Institute; the inaugural show of the V.I.T.A.L. Artist Collective at the Terry House; and the Summer Member Show by the members of the Arkansas Pastel Society at the gallery at Christ Episcopal Church. Also not to be missed is Art in the Park at Bernice Gardens (where they are also taking donations for Dress for Success) and the great exhibits at Historic Arkansas Museum. Whew. You’ve got a great night ahead! Friday, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Watch. You loved going to the drive-in as a kid – now take your own. On Saturday, Dreamland Ballroom will play host to “The Little Princess” in their drive-in movie fundraiser series. Last Chance. This is the last weekend to see World of the Pharoahs at the Arkansas Arts Center. This exhibit is full of interesting artifacts from everyday life in ancient Egypt. Our ministaffers have seen it four different times and loved it each and every time. The exhibit closes on Monday, so don’t miss your chance to enjoy the treasures. Grab a Bite. It’s time for the fourth Foodie Fest in Argenta! Don’t miss this fun and delicious way to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Local fare from Ashley’s, Argenta Market, Ferneau’s, Starving Artist Cafe, Dizzy’s, and many more will be available for your tasting pleasure. The Certified Arkansas Farmers Market, arts and crafts and live music will all be happening, too! It’s going to be a great day in Argenta. See the Stars. Kids of all ages (that includes us) enjoy fireworks – especially on the 4th of July. And there’s no better place to see fireworks in Little Rock, than along the banks of the Arkansas River. Join your friends and family for Pops on the River Sunday night. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and sit out under the stars. The Arkansas Symphony will entertain you with lots of great patriotic music, and then be prepared to be amazed at the very cool fireworks that will explode in the sky above. Sunday, gates open at 5:30 p.m. Arkansas Symphony Orchestra begins at 8:30 p.m. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. No coolers allowed, but concessions are available.

Summer has really come on strong this week. We hope you’ve been staying cool and enjoying the hot Arkansas weather! This weekend is Father’s Day – so whatever you do – don’t forget Dad! Fresh. Saturday morning, don’t forget to stop by the Certified Arkansas Farmers Market in Argenta. Things have really been hopping this year. Pick up some fresh corn, tomatoes, and whatever else is available this week. This is always one of our favorite things to do on Saturday. 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 6th & Main Streets, downtown North Little Rock.

Adventure. Have you ever read the children’s book, “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt?” It’s one of our favorites – and we’ve read it to our ministaffers more times than we can remember. On Saturday, learn more about bears as the expert guides at the Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center take you on an adventure learning about the black bears that inhabit our own state. 2:00 p.m. Kids 4-8. Float. Does your father like the water? Then make reservations to take him and the whole family on a canoe float down the Little Maumelle River on Father’s Day! Enjoy the Art. The months just seem to fly by, don’t they? And now we find ourselves back at 2nd Friday Art Night in downtown Little Rock. But that’s okay with us! Join Historic Arkansas Museum for opening night of their newest exhibit: “You Fit into Me: Works by David Carpenter and Lindsey Maestri.” These two contemporary sculptors use a wide range of materials and techniques. There will be live music by Haunted Pontiacs and the artists’ work will be available for purchase in the museum store. And while you’re there, stop by and say hello! Enjoy Being a Woman. This weekend, embark on an incredibly fun journey at the Arkansas Women’s Show. For two days, you’ll be able to explore all types of fun events, entertainment and information interesting to women. It’s another hot weekend. But now that school is out for everyone – we can say that summer has really begun! There are lots of fun things going on to suit everyone’s taste – from the Little Rock Film Festival to Farmer’s Markets. Sing it Out. Do you love that music from the good old days of the 50s and 60s? We sure do. You know – the songs that you can sing along to and make you smile? Songs like “Stand By Me,” “Hound Dog,” and “Love Potion #9.” These are all songs written by songwriters Leiber & Stoller and they (and many other popular songs) are featured in “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” which opens tonight at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. Don’t miss this super fun show. It’s been the longest running musical revue on Broadway – and it’s here in Little Rock for the summer. Walk. This is the last weekend of ArtWeek ’10, and tonight is the night to celebrate a successful ArtWeek with Argenta’s Third Friday ArtWalk. There will be lots of artists on the streets, and openings at the galleries – including Matt McLeod at Greg Thompson Fine Art and Dan Thornhill at Ketz Gallery. This is always a wonderful, family friendly time that you don’t want to miss. Friday, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Main Street in downtown North Little Rock.

Run. It’s time again for Dino Dash at the Museum of Discovery! This is the 11th year for this fun 5K run and family festival. If you’re not up for running 3.1 miles, take part in the 1K family fun run or just come for the Discovery Fest. This family friendly street festival in front of the Museum of Discovery includes a ton of entertainment, food, and fun that kids of all ages will enjoy. Relax. pArty. Last night was the official kick-off to ArtWeek’10, and now the events really kick into high gear. In downtown Little Rock tonight is 2nd Friday Art Night. There is lots to do at Historic Arkansas Museum, including celebrating pArty for Peg – a new sculpture for the museum, live music by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and the opening of their latest exhibit featuring work by Maribeth Anders and John Chiaromonte. And while you’re downtown, don’t forget to visit the Arkansas Studies Institute, Art Scene, Hearne Fine Art and Christ Church, too – lots of fun to be had. Friday, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Celebrate. There’s a great party planned Saturday on South Main Street in Little Rock. This is another event that’s part of ArtWeek’10 – and there’s something for everyone. There will be actors, artists, painters and more along the streets beginning at Community Bakery and ending at the Bernice Sculpture Garden.
