Tell Me a Story July 20, 2011 We are amazed at how many great art exhibits are hanging around town this summer.  How blessed we feel to live in a town that doesn’t skimp on the fine arts scene.  Even bigger towns don’t seem to have as many options for art exhibits, concerts and shows. During 2nd Friday Art Night, we were pleased to be able to attend the opening for Lawrence Finney’s new exhibit at Hearne Fine Art, “Poetry.”  This exhibit features works on both canvas and paper by a very talented figurative artist. We were especially drawn to Finney’s work entitled, “Daddy Watches,” which evokes feelings of parental protection and love.  All of Finney’s works have a beauty and sensitivity to them that speak to the human condition.  Some are scenes straight out of the Bible, while others tell an everyday story or remind us of the past. Finney’s ability to create the human body, both in charcoal and oil, is impressive.  Muscles bulge through clothing, and faces tell a story of joy, heartbreak or longing.  Each work captivates the viewer and brings one deeper and closer to the work and the story being told. We enjoyed this exhibit immensely, and always are pleased to be introduced to a new artist – especially one whose work gives us butterflies. Make an Impression June 22, 2011 Time is drawing to a close…at least if you want to see the Impressionist exhibit at the Arkansas Arts Center. We hadn’t seen the exhibit since the member opening, but really wanted to spend a little more time with the paintings without the crowds.  Plus, our ministaffers hadn’t seen the exhibit, and we couldn’t let them miss out. So Father’s Day brought a trip to the Arkansas Arts Center for brunch and time spent viewing “The Impressionists and Their Influence.”  We were impressed.  This is an incredible exhibition that the Arts Center put together along with the High Museum in Atlanta.  The Impressionist movement was major in the 19th Century.  These rogue painters actually moved outside to paint (imagine the scandal!) and with their break with the traditional “ways of doing things,” created a new movement in the art world called Impressionism. You will enjoy works by Monet, Degas, Pissaro, and Renoir, among others.  There are also wonderful works by American painters, including William Glackens, whose Coney Island drawing is probably our favorite piece in the entire show. The only bad thing about this exhibit is that it ends on June 26.  So this is your last chance to view this wonderful compilation of artwork from the collections of these two great museums. An even more fun way to peruse this art?  Attend the Au Revoir Party on Friday night.  Sip on Parisian cocktails and nibble on French street food, all the while getting to pose in a can can skirt in the middle of an Impressionist painting and bid farewell to this memorable exhibit. Southern Hospitality May 18, 2011 Even though some may still call us “Yankees,” we consider ourselves southern after living here for almost two decades.  The traditions of this region have seeped into our soul and we’d be hard-pressed to live anywhere else now. That’s why we are so excited about this weekend at Greg Thompson Fine Art!  On Friday is the opening of their newest exhibit, Best of the South.  And judging from the list of artists, it will be!  There are several artists whose work is in many major museums, including Carroll Cloar, Clementine Hunter, Theora Hamblett and Walter Anderson.  And living artists who are known throughout the South, like John Alexander, William Dunlap and Glennray Tutor. Tight & Teased April 20, 2011 Well, you should know by now that we are big fans of The Rep.  But last year when Bob Hupp announced the new season from the stage before one of the performances, our eldest ministaffer could hardly contain her excitement.  “HAIRSPRAY?” she whispered, “Really?! I love that show!” Boy, that’s an understatement.  When the movie version came out a few years ago, we literally wore the disc out. Flash forward a year, and Hairspray is finally on The Rep’s mainstage.  The ministaffers were giddy with anticipation as opening night drew near.  The lights dimmed, the restless little bodies quieted, and “Good Morning Baltimore” opened the show.  Those little bodies didn’t stay quiet for long.  How could they?  The energy of this case is unreal, and none of us could help but move right along with them. This is one of the best Rep productions in recent history.  Lillian Castillo plays the effervescent and determined Tracy Turnblad.  Her energy and talent are downright amazing.  She is joined by an incredibly talented cast which includes Antyon Le Monte playing Seaweed,  (That man can dance!) and Katie Emerson as Penny (who brought us to tears with her rendition of “Another Suitcase Another Hall” in Evita). There was never a moment in the performance where the cast did not work together to provide a constant stream of high energy fun for the entire audience.  And what always seems to gel a performance for us is when we feel that the actors are one unit – truly engaged with their characters and other cast members – so that we don’t feel performed at, but rather as if we’re spying on someone else’s life.  And this cast nails it. Tracy’s undying love for Link Larkin (Tommaso Antico) oozes off the stage during “It Takes Two” and that love is resolved not only beautifully but hilariously, causing whoops and cheers from the audience.  Yes, we’re right there with you, Tracy. So if you want to see some truly talented and top notch theater that’s appropriate for the entire family, you’ve found it with this production of Hairspray.  Don’t wait to get your tickets, because they will be gone.  This is a not-to-be-missed experience. Making a Statement March 16, 2011 Kitty Harvill knows how to make a statement.  Through her talented ability as a watercolorist, Harvill brings to life the beauty and tranquility of nature, while at the same time reminding us that this beauty cannot last if we do not change our ways.In Harvill’s latest exhibit at Cantrell Callery, Brazil: An Endangered Beauty, she explores the plants and animals of the Atlantic coastal rainforest in order to bring awareness to its degredation and devistation. Bright, joyful colors jump off the paper, delighting the viewer and asking one to step closer.  Birds of all colors and sizes are expertly reproduced in the bold and happy colors that exist in a rainforest environment. But just as one begins to enjoy these exceptional works of art, the reminder sinks in that these gorgeous creatures are all near extinction if something is not done to help save their environment. This exhibit is a poignant reminder that much of the beauty of this world existed long before we arrived, but unless we change some of our ways, we may not be able to enjoy it much longer. Harvill is a native of Arkansas, but now splits her time between here and Brazil.  Her specialty is wildlife art, and we recommend that you not miss her current exhibit.
