It’s another hot weekend. But now that school is out for everyone – we can say that summer has really begun! There are lots of fun things going on to suit everyone’s taste – from the Little Rock Film Festival to Farmer’s Markets. Be sure to check out our calendar so you don’t miss a thing – and if we’ve missed your event – post it! We want to know all about what’s happening around here.
Sing it Out. Do you love that music from the good old days of the 50s and 60s? We sure do. You know – the songs that you can sing along to and make you smile? Songs like “Stand By Me,” “Hound Dog,” and “Love Potion #9.” These are all songs written by songwriters Leiber & Stoller and they (and many other popular songs) are featured in “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” which opens tonight at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. Don’t miss this super fun show. It’s been the longest running musical revue on Broadway – and it’s here in Little Rock for the summer. Arkansas Repertory Theatre, 601 Main Street, Friday and Saturday, 8:00 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Through June 27. Call (501) 378-0405 or visit www.therep.org.
Eat. Love Gumbo? We do! Be sure to join the Allen School on Saturday for their Jumbo Gumbo Cook Off! Amateur teams will compete to see who can cook the best gumbo – all while the kids can frolic through the petting zoo and everyone can dance to the tunes of Tragikly White. Saturday, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Pleasant Ridge Town Center. $15 for adults and $5 for kids. Visit www.jumbogumbocookoff.com for more information.
Look. Join the Arkansas Chamber Singers for a delicious meal and a stroll through the beautiful gardens of Mike and Beth Coulson. There will be shrimp and grits toasts, steak, salmon and much more to whet your appetite. Then feast your eyes on the beautiful views of the Arkansas River as the sun sets. Sunday, 6:30 p.m. Home of Mike & Beth Coulson, 4 E. Palisades Drive. Tickets $75 per person. Visit www.ar-chambersingers.org for tickets and more information.
