Sing It Proud

Sing It Proud
March 17, 2010

What are you passionate about?  Is it running – or music – or art – or wine?  Do you live your passion?  Most of us don’t.  It’s a shame, really.  We’ve found that the more we live our passion, the more successful and fulfilled we are as a person.  But living your passion also comes with hardships and sacrifices.

Florence Foster Jenkins was one of those women who lived her passion.  And her passion was singing.  Now, for Jenkins, it didn’t matter that she couldn’t sing.  She loved it and she had the money to make it happen.  And that is the story behind The Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s newest production, Glorious!

Glorious! is a new play – so it’s very likely that you’ve never seen or heard of it before.  But a ticket to this production is worth every penny.  It’s filled with laughs and silliness (and it’s based on a true story), but at the end of the night, not only were we left with a smile on our face, but also a lesson well learned:  Live your life to the fullest; enjoy every minute; enjoy your friends; live your dreams.  And if you do all that – then no one can say you didn’t live life well.

Nicole Capri Bauer does an excellent job directing this comedy, and the casting couldn’t have been better.  The simple sets juxtaposed with video of 1940 New York work well to take the audience into Jenkins world of high society.

We recommend this show for the whole family.  Even our ministaffer loved it – and laughed with us every time Jenkins opened her mouth to sing.  And even though many made fun of her in her time, we respect her.  For as this play showed us, we really must do our best to live life passionately.  For in the end, what else is there?
