What’s On Your Plate?

February 18, 2010

Have you ever just closed your eyes and wondered what it would be like if you lost your ability to see?  If you’re like most adults, you probably haven’t thought about that since you were a child.  But there are capable, contributing members of our society who can’t see, and there are organizations out there making sure they are productive members of our workforce.

Arkansas Lighthouse for the Blind is an  organization that does just that.  And this year, to celebrate their 70th anniversary, they are hosting “Dining in the Dark” – a first event of its kind in Arkansas.

What is Dining in the Dark?  Well, it’s a unique experience of dining in complete darkness.  First Lady Ginger Beebe attended a similar event in Kansas City, and we had the opportunity to visit with her about the experience.  Through reminiscent laughs and joyous conversation, Mrs. Beebe told us about being led through a maze before being seated at her table.  Done in complete darkness, the waiter (who is blind) took their drink orders and conversation slowly began as people felt around to discover a salad before them.  “You have no idea what you’re eating,” Mrs. Beebe said.  “It’s amazing to experience food in a different way.  And by then end of the evening there was such excitement and understanding and appreciation.”

Opaque Restaurant in California – a Dining in the Dark restaurant – will train the Lighthouse employees to serve, and will also be in charge of the daunting task of making the Governor’s Mansion totally dark for the evening.  There will be a lighted reception at the Rogers House across the street, and then guests will be led into the Governor’s Mansion for the most unique dining experience ever.

“Anyone can overcome their disabilities and have a good life,” Mrs. Beebe told us.    And Mrs. Beebe told us about her love of the herb and vegetable garden at the Mansion.  “Anyone can experience the herb garden and smell and touch it’s beauty.”  She said.  In fact, there is an audio tour of the herb garden especially for the blind.

We can’t think of a better excuse to experience something new and different than by supporting Lighthouse and their work with the blind.  And we guarantee – after spending time with Mrs. Beebe and listening to her experience – that this will be one dinner you won’t soon forget.
