Art in Doing

Art comes in all shapes and forms. And sometimes it doesn’t hang on a wall or sit on a table, either. Sometime art is the way the wind blows the flowers, or the birds chirping, or the building within which you work or live. We’re always looking for all the different ways that art impacts our lives, and how we can celebrate it.
And there just happens to be one next week. On Tuesday evening, the second lecture in the 2009-2010 Art of Architecture series will be held at the Arkansas Arts Center. This is a wonderful series sponsored by the Central Arkansas Chamber of the AIA, the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture, the Arkansas Arts Center and Friends of Architecture. If affords all of us the opportunity to learn more about the art that goes into creating the structures that we may take for granted, or that haven’t even crossed our minds.
Tuesday’s lecture is no different. Sharon Priest will present the program – “MacArthur Park Redux: Never Underestimate What A Group of Citizens Can Do.” MacArthur Park is the city’s oldest park. It houses the Arkansas Arts Center and the Museum of Arkansas Military History, as well as playgrounds and a pond. In 2006, the Little Rock Downtown Partnership committed itself to the revitalization of this aging park and put together a group of citizens to address the needs.
Since then, the group has raised money to create a master park plan, and improvements are beginning. The master plan is currently pending approval from the Little Rock Board of Directors, and will be on display during the lecture.
Join Priest and others interested in the revitalization of this beautiful area of Little Rock. There will be a reception at 5:30 and the lecture will begin at 6:00. Come hear about the great changes that are amongst us!
