Night at Home

We’ve told you about some great places to go for New Year’s tonight. But if you find that you’re shaping up for a family night with the kids, we’re right there with you. We try to balance the New Year’s Eve’s that we go out with the one’s that we stay in. Our mini-staffers deserve some fun, too!
So tonight, we’re having a family party. We’ll invite a few friends and just chill. After all the running around that the December brings, sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and relax.
We’ll make an easy supper using our mother’s polenta and bagna recipe. It’s in reality our great-grandmother’s recipe, if one looked back far enough, first served in the Northern Italian town of Lanzo. And it’s delicious – a rich ragout of hearty mushrooms and sausage piled high on warm polenta.
But our most favorite part of this meal is the popovers. Perfected long ago, our mother has these down pat. Even Neiman Marcus can’t top Mom’s popovers. And they’re really quite simple.
Mix 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of milk, 2 eggs, a dab of butter and a pinch of salt together. Add a bit more milk if the batter is too thick. Then pour in muffin tins and bake at 400 degrees for 30-40 minutes. They’re ready when they’ve popped and are brown on top. Leave them in the oven another 5 minutes to crisp. That’s it!
If you’re going out tonight – have a great time! You can save this recipe for a New Year’s Day brunch. But if you’re staying in like we are tonight, try adding some popovers to your menu. But make extras – these don’t last long!
Happy New Year!!
