Open the Door

Open the Door

October 29, 2009

Tuesday night we had a most enjoyable dinner.  After a busy day, we met friends at Mark Abernathy’s new restaurant, Red Door.  This restaurant is located where Bene Vita used to be – right next to Loca Luna.

We arrived around seven o’clock and the restaurant was busy.  That’s always a good sign.  Our waiter was pleasant and accommodating and soon we had one of our favorite wines – a Millsreef Sauvignon Blanc in front of us.

blue crabWe decided that the most fun would be to order lots of different dishes and share.  We love to share.  So the first dish to arrive was the Blue Mesa cheese dip.  Oh, that stuff is good!!  It was followed by some delicious blue crab claws that were lightly battered and fried.  They didn’t last long, either!

Then we got our entrees.  They included wet ribs that literally fell off the bones, a chicken fried Angus steak, and mussels with french fries.  There was not an unhappy person at the table.  The mussels were cooked perfectly in a butter and wine sauce that reminded us of a lovely lunch we enjoyed in Montmartre a few years ago.  The fries were pencil thin, just like they should be, and dipping them in the sauce was divine.

The chicken fried Angus and wet ribs also got rave reviews – along with the homemade macaroni and cheese that accompanied.  Abernathy himself was on hand that night, and we enjoyed visiting with him about his new place, too.

The red door?  It hangs above the bar and greets guests proudly as they walk into the restaurant.  Abernathy told us that he and his wife bought the door in Mexico years ago, and that until this restaurant opened, it hung above their fireplace.  It makes a wonderful addition to the restaurant and we’re glad he’s sharing it with all of us now.

We didn’t have any room left for dessert, but we’re hoping that the next time we go, we’ll remember to save a little spot for a taste.  The menu is well diversified and there really is something for everyone on it.  We look forward to trying the soft shelled crab sandwich or the grouper next time.  Who knows, maybe we’ll even decide to order both and share again!

We recommend a trip to Abernathy’s newest restaurant.  It was fun, casual, and the food was outstanding.  And as Abernathy himself describes the restaurant – it really is “modern southern cuisine”.
