Style at the Table
October 19, 2009

There is something so elegant about a well crafted piece of glass.  Whether it is a bowl, vase, or wine glass, when there is quality at the table, you just know it.

That’s how we feel about Simon Pierce.  Simon Pierce is a talented artist and glass blower originally from Ireland.  But in 1981, he moved his operation to Quechee, Vermont.  This is where we were first introduced to his work.  As a child growing up in New England, we were always blessed with great trips and adventures.

One of those adventures took us to Simon Pierce’s studio in Quechee.  It’s really amazing.  He redid an old mill, and it’s a working mill.  The water from the river provides the power for the glass furnaces as well as all the electricity for the site.  Pierce doesn’t work alone anymore.  He has teams of glass blowers who are well trained in his techniques.  And his work is available at fine stores nationwide.

But in Arkansas – there’s only one place you can purchase Pierce’s exquisite work – Fifth Season.  That’s a pretty special deal.  Pierce doesn’t let just anyone sell his stuff.  Owners Bo and Sissy Clinton visited his studio and befriended Pierce.  Once Pierce had an opportunity to get to know the Clintons and learn more about their wonderful store in Little Rock, he decided to let them sell his work exclusively in Arkansas.

WellesleyThe Clintons have done a wonderful job showcasing Pierce’s work, and we’ve bought several of his pieces for our own table.  One of our favorite purchases were two wonderful bud vases from the Wellesley Collection.  These vases exude what we are all about: understated elegance.  And we get more compliments on them than any other piece of glass we own.

Pierce’s collections don’t come cheap, but they are worth the money.  And we’ve started collecting wine glasses – one stem at a time.  This is a great tradition.  When we have an anniversary, birthday, or other milestone in our house, we purchase another piece of our collection.  One of these days we will be able to set our entire table with Simon Pierce.  And when we do – we’re throwing a party!

Stop by Fifth Season for yourself and see their wonderful collection of Simon Pierce glassware.  The holidays are coming up – and these pieces make wonderful gifts – for someone else or for you!
