Hot In Little Rock

World Food Day is tomorrow, October 16, 2009.  This world-wide call to action has been happening since 1981.  It’s a day to remember that not all of us have the luxury of eating what we want, when we want.  It’s a day to remember that we all live on this planet together.  It’s a day to remember that all of us need to do our part to alleviate hunger.

Yes, World Food Day is an international day of awareness.  But locally, there are a lot of things you can do to help.  The Arkansas Rice Depot works tirelessly every day to make sure that Arkansans are fed.  They provide food for kids at school, who otherwise wouldn’t get any meal but lunch.  They provide food for families who can’t afford to buy food on their own.  They also provide food for seniors on a fixed income to help them bridge the gap when money runs out before the end of the month.

Arkansas Rice Depot provides many worthwhile programs to help fight and stop hunger in our state.  And there are others out there committed to helping the hungry as well.  Just stop by the Salvation Army on Thursday mornings.  You’ll find a group of committed individuals feeding the homeless in our city.  Bring some boiled eggs and help pass out food.

We are sure that everyone reading Hot in Little Rock is dry, warm, and fed this morning.  And we are all so fortunate for those small blessings.  So tomorrow, celebrate World Food Day by volunteering or donating your time, money or canned goods to an organization that is committed to feeding the hungry year-round.  Your one small step could blossom into a community of big steps.
