FABBA Fun!

Last night was a late night, but the grogginess of the morning was so worth it. We took the ministaffers to see Mamma Mia! last night. What fun. Now, we are all huge fans of the movie that came out last year. (And that’s really an understatement.) The ministaffers know every song by heart, and we love being able to share the music of ABBA with them.
So when we learned that Mamma Mia! was opening the season for Celebrity Attractions, we were thrilled. And last night didn’t disappoint. Mamma Mia! is a high energy and fun musical about a bride looking for her dad among three possibilities. It’s a very silly plot, but it works.
The actors touring in this production of Mamma Mia! were very good. They created hilarious slap-stick humor throughout the show, that even the ministaffers enjoyed. And the musical numbers were well choreographed and well executed. Several of them ended with the audience erupting in applause.
The musical numbers include “Dancing Queen” with the mother of the bride and her two best friends dancing around their room singing into hairdryers and curling irons and using other props to create lots and lots of laughter. There’s also the well-done scene during the number “Man After Midnight,” where the bride takes turns talking to her three possible fathers. The rest of the cast goes to shadow and slow motion. It works.
And after the curtain call and the happy ending, the audience was on their feet clapping and singing and dancing while the entire cast performed our favorite songs again. The ministaffers ran to the orchestra pit for this after-show treat, and probably would have joined the dancing on stage if we hadn’t stopped them.
Yes, this is a great musical for all ages. It’s funny, touching, and just plain old fun. There are only two shows left, so make sure you see it before it’s gone. Our ministaffers are already asking to go again!
