Long Time Comin’

September 24, 2009

Last week was a long week.  We worked long hours; we did a lot of heavy lifting; we attended a gallery opening, Friday Night Art Walk, and other events.  So by Sunday, we were completely exhausted.

We didn’t want to do anything.  We didn’t want to cook (that’s a sure sign of exhaustion for us!) and we just knew that if rest didn’t come, we were bound to get sick.  Thankfully, Capi’s had us covered.

After enjoying the Sunday paper from cover to cover and having loads of coffee, we remembered that it was the first weekend for Capi’s to debut their weekend brunch.  Quickly we showered and headed out to give it a try.

We were glad we didn’t venture out until almost 1:00 in the afternoon.  They had been packed.  Apparently we weren’t the only ones in town waiting for Capi’s to offer a brunch.  But by the time we got there things had calmed down and we were immediately seated in our favorite booth.

There was a nice string duo playing live music, and the restaurant was alive.  We ordered two glasses of sparkling pinot noir.  This is a wonderful alternative to a mimosa.  The brunch menu has some wonderful dishes on it.  From french toast to poached eggs, you can have a true brunch experience.

Capi herself was in the kitchen on Sunday, making sure everything was up to snuff.  She sent out her blintzes for us to try.  They were outstanding.  The filling is not sweet at all.  The sweetness comes from the jam on top, which is complemented by the sour cream.  This is the traditional way of making a blintz, and we gobbled them up.

Then out came our main dishes.  We ordered a wonderful twist on the traditional eggs benedict.  Instead of ham, we enjoyed smoked salmon on English muffins.  The poached eggs were perfectly runny – and mixed with the Hollandaise sauce made for a lick-the-plate-clean combination.  The other dish we ordered was the huevos rancheros.  Also divine, the eggs on that dish are served sunny side up.  Again, they were not overcooked and the entire meal could be wrapped in the (what tasted homemade) fresh tortillas.

By the time we left, we were stuffed to the gills, but so happy we had ventured out and let someone else cook for us.  The meal was outstanding, and we’ve missed a great brunch place in that area.

Capi’s food is always consistently good, as is the service.  The wine list is small but nice, and we greatly enjoyed the ability to order sparkling pinot noir by the glass.

We look forward to our next brunch experience at Capi’s very soon.
