Day Trip

Happy Labor Day! We hope that you are taking it easy today, drinking some strong coffee and thinking about anything but work. So on a day when we’re all supposed to be relaxing and chillin’ out, we thought we’d tell you about a recent trip we took to the Scott Plantation Settlement with the ministaffers.

It was a Saturday. The ministaffers had seen all the movies out there, and they’d also swum in the pool until their fingers wrinkled. It was time to get out and do something! So we asked them, “What do you want to do?” And the reply? “We want to go on a tour and learn something.” Well, we were impressed. And we couldn’t turn down such a request.

So we thought about places close to town that we hadn’t been recently – or ever. It was like playing tour guide for ourselves. Suddenly the thought struck us – we had never been to the Scott Plantation Settlement. It’s an easy drive and soon we were pulling up to the plantation on a hot Saturday afternoon.

We were met by a wonderful older man, whose family had been sharecroppers in Scott. After watching a movie that gave a brief overview of the area, we were off for a guided tour. We saw a blacksmith’s shop, the doctor’s office, a school, the main house, and a sharecroppers house. We learned the hierarchy of sharecropping and enjoyed hearing stories from one who lived them. Our guide even knew some of the people who lived in the houses we toured, and his personal information added so much to our tour.

The ministaffers got to chew on some freshly cut sorghum and ring the bell in the middle of the plantation. And everything is touchable. Our guide encouraged the ministaffers to touch EVERYTHING. Now, this made for nervous adults, but the ministaffers loved every minute of it. We even sat down and played a pump organ like the one with which we grew up.

The plantation has a little gift shop, too. Where you can buy souvenirs of a time gone by, as well as t-shirts, aprons, and the video from the beginning of the tour. The have a big festival coming up on October 3 called “High Cotton on the Bayou,” and we can’t wait to return for that celebration.

So if you’re looking for an educational and fun outing with your kids, or if you have friend from out of town, or if you just want to learn more about the Scott area, this is a wonderful excursion.
